What is the Key to Generating Power in a Golf Swing?
So after you have treated your LBP and you have a pain free golf swing, what is the key to generating power? EPSN Sports Science did an excellent clip on the importance of the kinematic sequence with Rory McIlroy, breaking down the basics to the kinetic chain. How can someone who is 5'9" and 160 lbs drive the ball 300+ yards? Well, the KEY TO POWER is the kinetic chain and the ability to improve the transfer of energy from the hips, to the trunk, to the arms, and through the club.
The graph above is an example data that you can gather with a 3D golf swing analysis. Each line dictates a different body part. With the golf swing, and ideal sequence is needed, and thus you get a graph like this. Now the transfer of energy is measured with the downslope of each line after the peak of each body part. This measures the deceleration of each joint, or the transfer of energy. Increase slope = increased energy transferred. This dictates the power you can generate with your golf swing. You can train yourself to improve the neuro-muscular control and strength of each body part with the proper training and specific exercises. With the proper exercises you can become more efficient at transferring energy with your golf swing, thus hitting the ball farther, and decreasing your scores! You don't need to have pain to consult Pursuit Physical Therapy. Call now and schedule a golf swing consultation and start generating power with your golf swing!

Is an Epidural the Best Treatment for my Spinal Stenosis?
Getting an epidural or injection is a very common practice to treat low back pain, especially with lumbar stenosis (or a narrowing of space along the spine that is associated with increased age). A recent study looked at long term outcomes with epidural injections in patients with lumbar stenosis and showed:
** Injections were associated with significantly less improvement at 4 years among patients with spinal stenosis
** Injections were associated with longer duration of surgery and longer hospital stays
Lumbar stenosis is a complex diagnosis, but physical therapy has shown promising outcomes and can be attempted as a first line treatment approach. Contact Pursuit Physical Therapy today and see if physical therapy is the right treatment to help your spinal stenosis!

Direct Access to Physical Therapy,Should I do this?
Another recent post from from University Health System in Texas, found that putting appropriate patients with a therapist immediately — or within three days at the most — led to fewer treatments, fewer tests and more patient satisfaction. Overall, the medical charges for those patients came to $1,500 less per patient. There is no need to be in pain! Consult your physical therapist now, get treated, and get back to the things you love faster! If you are in Florida, visit the Pursuit Physical Therapy website and see if physical therapy is appropriate for you to get out of pain.

Pain and Motor Control: A Must Read for All Physical Therapists

Todd Hargrove wrote an excellent review in a 4 part series from a course that Paul Hodges and Lorimer Moseley held recently. I already posted the links on the facebook page once, but this information regarding pain and motor control is so good that I had to post it again. If you are a physical therapist and have never read any of Hodges's or Moseley's work, this is a must read! This is truly great work! I wish that I could have gone to this course and I hope it comes to Florida someday soon. Below are the links to each review:
Part 1 Motor Control
Part 2 Neurotags, Disinhibition, and Sensitization
Part 3 Body Matrix and Neglect
Part 4 Nociception

Future of Medicine?? Scary!

A colleague of mine Dr. Donley just wrote an excellent write-up regarding the future of healthcare and what ObamaCare will lead to. Please click on the links to read. This is very scary and those in medicine are going to a path of future uncertainty.

Treatment for Tinnitus??

Science Based Medicine did a great review of evidenced based interventions for tinnitus. Sorry to say that there currently are no cures and it looks like we are still trying to understand the mechanism. Below is the link:

The Great Prone Press Up!

The prone press up is a great tool to help with low back but it needs to be performed correctly. Dr. E reviews the prone press up and the correct way to implement it in patients with low back, with flexion sensitivity, and who respond to repeated extension.
