5 Tips for Pain Free Running: Avoid Heel Strike
1. Avoid Heel Strike
Many beginner runners ask me how they should be running. Running training should be focused on 1 of 2 things: 1) injury prevention or 2) performance. So the main purpose of this post is to focus on injury prevention and treatment. So I promote runners to avoid a heel strike and to try more of a mid foot strike when running with pain or recovering from an injury. Landing with a midfoot strike has been associated with decreases in peak impact loads and a decrease in knee pain (patellar-femoral symptoms). Below is a diagram from a breakthrough article in Nature that shows landing forces with different striking patterns.
Notice the lack of the sharp increase spike with a mid foot strike. One of the main points to take away from the article is the decrease in force and lack of transient impact with strike with a mid foot strike. This difference and benefit of barefoot vs shod running is for another post, but these two articles show great evidence to help support a mid foot strike to help prevent injury and decrease impact forces to the legs. I personally tried this and loved the way it feels when running vs with a heel strike. Tune in next week for Tip #2!!! The 5 tips for pain free running series
Do you ever get pain when running? Tired of having knee pain after a run when walking up stairs? This is going to be the blog for you!
First, I would like to say thank you to Fleet Feet Orlando and I am very grateful to them for asking me to write as a guest blogger. This series will be posted to their blog here as they start their No Boundaries Running Program. I thoroughly enjoy treating runners and helping them get back to doing the activity they love....running. Not just running , but pain free running! Over the next several weeks, as the racing season starts, I will be posting a 5 part series that will review 5 simple tips that can help prevent running injuries. Most running injuries occur due to 3 things: structural issues, training errors, and biomechanical errors, and simple changes can be made to correct any dysfunction that is present that may lead to injury. We will be addressing the treatment, prevention, and certain strategies that me help with plantar fasciitis, runner's knee, IT Band syndrome, and more. For more information about me, Pursuit Physical Therapy, the Running Injury Program, and about treatment of running injuries, visit www.PursuitTherapy.com.

Bad Medicine!.......... for low back pain
Maybe Bon Jovi was right with Bad Medicine! Does your clinician follow the established guidelines to treat low back pain (LBP) or are you receiving "bad medicine"? A recent study from the Journal of American Medial Association - Internal Medicine, stated that " Despite numerous published clinical guidelines, management of back pain has relied increasingly on guideline discordant care." The results of this 2013 showed:
No change in physical therapy referrals
Increase in narcotic usage
Decrease in NSAIDS and tylenol usage
Increase in diagnostic imaging (such as CT scans and MRI)
Increase in physician referrals
Physical therapy and the usage of NSAIDS were considered as GOOD coordination with the LBP guidelines and evidenced based. Physician referrals, diagnostic imaging, and narcotic usage were considered BAD coordination with the guidelines. This looks like the health care system is doing everything along the BAD track doesn't it? So,is your clinician following the guidelines, that have been set by proven and established research, and may lead to better outcome for our patients with LBP or are they following Bad Medicine! Here is another link to physician guidelines in the clinic regarding the treatment of LBP from the American College of Physician. At Pursuit Physical Therapy, you never have to question your quality of care. Your treatment is always what is best for you! If you have LBP, call Pursuit Physical Therapy at 407-494-8835 or visit our website at www.PursuitTherapy.com for more information about how we can help your LBP.
